Description
The specimen shows the larynx and base of the tongue viewed from the back, together with a
portion of the left lower jaw which is largely surrounded by a large tumour; the tumour obviously
involving muscle but its origin from the bone cannot be seen in this specimen.
History
This woman presented at the age of 96 with this tumour mass which she thought had
been present for only a few months. At autopsy (death was due to bronchopneumonia) metastatic
deposits were seen in heart, lung, adrenal and thyroid. At the age of 81 she had had a simple
mastectomy for a carcinoma of the breast. Histologically the two tumours are unrelated.
