Description
The specimen consists of the greater part of the colon; the wall is markedly thickened and the
mucosa shows a characteristic "cobblestone" pattern.
History
This young woman presented in her mid-twenties with diarrhoea which had been present
for eighteen months. A diagnosis of Crohn's disease was made; medical treatment failed and total
proctocolectomy was carried out. She made an excellent recovery and remains well and
symptom-free.
